Elton John & Tim Rice's AIDA (click here
for photos)
The
Broadway musical that won five Tony Awards,
including Best Musical Score and Best Actress,
came to the local stage at Lee High School for
its first ever production in Huntsville. The
musical tells the story of the opera "Aida,"
based on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," in
very modern terms. The eclectic musical score
has hints of reggae, Motown, and Gospel. It also
relies on a strong influence of African music
and modern pop style numbers, but it is most
touching in the more reflective moments given to
Aida, the dignified Nubian princess.
Thanks to all the students, teachers, parents, and volunteers who made this performance such an incredible event. All-State Choral Festival
The
Alabama Vocal Associated hosted its All-State
Choral Festival for 2009 at Samford University
in Birmingham on February 26-28, with very
entertaining choral concerts held on Friday
evening and Saturday afternoon. Lee High School
once again had very strong representation in
each of the high school choral groups. Friday
evening's program featured Middle School Treble
and Mixed Choirs, followed by an exceptional
performance by the All-State (High School) Show
Choir. Lee High students gained 15 of the 60
positions on the Show Choir, which was selected
based on 249 student auditions.
Saturday's performances featured compelling performances from the Men's Chorus, the Women's Chorus, and the Mixed Chorus. Lee High had strong representation in each of these groups. The awards for Outstanding Male and Female Choral Student and Outstanding Accompanist all went to students from the city of Huntsville. Outstanding Accompanist was Sarah Coleman from Huntsville High. Outstanding Male singer was Kareem Elsamadicy from Columbia High, and the Outstanding Female singer was our own Emily Stewart from Lee High School. Each award winner performed a beautiful solo selection, but an unbiased poll of Lee parents found that Emily's performance of "Quando m'en vo soletta" (Musetta's Aria) from "La Boheme" was the best performance in the show.

Sweets & Songs
Lee
Lyric Theater's annual fundraiser, "Sweets &
Songs," was held on Saturday, February 21st at
7:30 pm. It featured performance from the
Sterling and Trouveres Show Choirs in addition
to our 2009 Seniors and our participants in the
Alabama Trumbauer Theater Competition. Dramatic
and comedy songs were performed from Broadway
musicals including "Rent," "Into the Woods,"
"Dreamgirls," "Hairspray," "Dirty Rotten
Scoundrels," "Les Miserables," and a number of
others.
Special thanks to our Lee Lyric parents who decorated and picked up desserts, and we greatly appreciate the generosity of the local restaurants and businesses who donated such great sweets for our dessert buffet.
Christmas Concert -- (click photo to see more pictures)
The holidays are always a stressful time, but the audience that attended the Lee Choir Christmas Concert on December 9th was given a relaxing and entertaining respite from their other commitments. After a catered dinner from Carrabba's Restaurant, a number of the vocal groups at Lee High School provided an excellent concert. First was a selection of soprano and alto harmonies from the Women's Choir, followed by the tenors and basses in the Men's Choir. Vocal Magnet I then sang some beautiful ensemble pieces.
Next the Varsity took the stage, when the Soprano / Alto / Tenor / Bass Mixed Choir provided complex mixed harmonies that featured their excellent vocal training. "Sound & Soul" provided improvised four-part harmonies based on traditional Christmas carols, and they were an audience favorite. The show choirs performed next, starting with the Sterling Women, who were soon joined by the men, who prefer to be called the "Sterling Studs." Young men do like to dream . . .
Finally, the award-winning Trouveres took the stage, and they showed once again why they are one of the most recognized Show Choirs in North Alabama. The evening concluded with a Lee High School tradition, when former Trouveres joined the current group to perform "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," a staple that the group has performed every year since 1982. The most touching part of the performance was when Michael Luwoye noticed that Shane Blometjie did not have a dance partner for the big number. Michael coaxed Shane out of his timid shell to allow him to show his graceful beauty on the dance floor. There wasn't a dry eye, or suppressed giggle, in the house. Great job, gang!
Thanks to Bert Gover for his pictures from the Christmas Concert. More photos can be found here.
